Games Workshop has had numerous games that use 6mm minatures based on their universe, what they refer to as 'epic scale' miniatures. I decided to gather them all here, most are part of their main epic system, some are other games that use the same scale miniatures. This turned out to be a much biggger job than I expected.

I am sure that I have virtually all the entries on this list, but much more details can be done on the description. At one time I knew most of this stuff off the top of my head, now I had do do a lot more research. I hope to refine and add to this history of Epic, but I will display this work in progress as I feel it is at a stage where it can be helpful, is of interest, and could spark some interesting discussion. 1989First edition subtitled Epic Battles in the Age of Heresy was set in a much early time period that Warhammer 40,000. It featured Space Marines verses Space Marines in a civil war. The game could be combined with the previous published Adeptus Titanicus.14 Buildings, molded plastic rooves with thick colour card walls.8 sprues of miniatures in two colours (Dark Blue and Dark Green), each sprue contained 2 Land Raiders and 4 Rhinos and 40 space marines in the original 'beaky' marine style.Stickers to make flages for the banner poles which fitted on the infantry bases.

There were 12 Space Marine chapters though in games mechanic they ware not distinguished at all.Imperial: Blood Angels, Ultramarines, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Whitescars and Salamanders.Traitor: Emperors Children, Death Guards, Thousand Sons, World Eaters, Sons of Horus and Night Lords. Some additional miniatures were released for the first edition game system. The first wave of these were three boxes of plastic minatures:. Battle Titans - 6 plastic warhound titans that same as came in the Adeptus Titanicus box set.The other two plastic box sets that are similar size to half the miniature sprues in original Space Marine box in that each sprue has 20 identical infantry figures and a small number of identical vehicles, with 8 sprues per box:. Ork Horde - 140 Ork Boyz and 24 Battlewagons. Eldar Legion - 140 Eldar Gurdians and 16 Falcon TanksThere were also numerous metal miniatures released. 1989 to 1991White Dwarf Magazine had numerous articles on Adeptus Titanicus (AT) and/or Space Marine (SM)#109) Land Raider!

New rules (AT)#109) Reavers and Warhounds: new titan classes (AT)#110) Space Marine! Rules for infantry (AT)#110) Eldar: rules (AT)#111) Chain Fist!weaponry and close combat (AT)#111) Craters (AT)#112) Conqueror! 1990 to 1991The second wave of miniatures were sold in the same boxes as the Ork Horde and Eldar legion. The contained mostly infantry and smaller vehicles, like bikes, but much more variety on the sprues. All except the Stompers set which had 6, contained 10 of each sprue. (Amounts given in brackets are per sprue).Epic Imperial Gurad.Epic Squat Warriors.Epic Space Marines.Epic Ork Invasion.Epic Chaos Horde.Epic Eldar War Host.Epic Stompers (1 Ork Dreadnaught, 2 Eldar Dreadnaughts, 1 Ork Dreadnaught, 4 chaos Androids, 2 Marine Dreadnaughts, 1 Ork Shock Gun, 2 Chaos Dreadnaughts, 2 Marines in Terminator Armour, 1 Mole Mortar)A great side for seeing details of epic models is from epicollector.com.

This site shows very good details of individual models, it does not show how the packs were sold. 1990Second edition was subtitled Epic Conflict in the War Torn Universe of the 41st Millenium and brought the setting into the standard era of Warhammer 40,000. It radically revised but still fundamentally the same system, unlike the latter version of the epic range. The new edition included Orks, Eldar and Titans in the base rules. These and other new races were greatly expanded in the latter supplements. The miniatures in this game were Space Marines (same sprues as in 1st edition) and Orks and Eldar (same sprues as in the Orc Horde and Eldar Legion box sets. Six sprues of each type. The buildings in the game used the same moulded plastic rooves as first edition but different designed sides still on the same heavy cardboard.

1991Coinciding with the new edition all the plastic Space Marine miniatures were repackaged, there were no new models but they were sold now in larger boxes in a combination of different armies. Battle Titans with the six Warlord Titans was still available, but all other plastics boxes were replaced with the following in a box a similar size to the the titan's box. Space Marines, Elder and Orks (the less varied models from base game).

Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Eldar and Chaos. War Horde - Orks, Squats and StompersBy 1993 Games Workshop appears to have realised that having to buy diferent armies together was unpopular, and repackaged the plastic sprues again inot seperate boxes, this time they were only half thse size with most containing 5 sprues. The image on this listing shows one of these 1993 boxes, Ork Invasion. Also some of the metal miniatures previously in blister paks were repackaged as box sets. 1997Warhammer Epic 40,000 is Games Workshop's re-released Epic as an entirely new game system. A complete re-write set 10,000 years after theHorus Heresy. The basic mechanics were slightly more complex than Space Marine, but there were none of the reams of special abilities and exceptions so it played a lot faster.

On the down side, it had no reams of special abilities and the various races lacked flavor. Even though the system was very original and focused on firepower and the realistic effects of being shot at, the effects of damage were abstract and difficult for a new gamer to get into. The box set again came with a large number of platic miniatures.

This time many of the minatures had been redesigned in much greater detail and optional pieces. This time around the scenery is fully plastic ruins rather than the card buildings of earlier editions. Use of the same miniature aircraft rather than the system is the connection with the other epic games.Since December 2005 this game has been available in a free print and play from Games Workshop. 20034th Official edition of the Epic game system. This game has evolved from the 3rd edition and tried to add in differentiation between units without adding too much to the complexity.

Another thing this game did to add to game balance is rather than giving generic armies of a particular race, each list is a specific army of a specific campaign. The core book focuses on the Armageddon campaign with lists for These include the Imperial Guard armies Steel Legion Mechanized Infantry, Space Marines of the Adaptes Astartes and the forces of the Ork Warlord Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka. This is also the first edition published just as a book, not a boxed set. Miniatures released for this game were based on 3rd edition miniatures with only a few new sculpts. Multi part vehicles from 3rd edition are often cast in less parts meaning less configurable options. Core troops are plastic in new sprue configuration, but many more specialised infantry previously in plastic are now cast in metal.
